SOMEWHERE IN THE PANHANDLE, FLA -
Sgt. Walter Schmidt, a 37 year old guard at the Franklin Correctional Institution, apparently does not get the "Take Your Kids to Work Day" concept. This past Friday Seargant Walter was giving a group of kids a tour of the prison on "Take Your Sons and Daughters to Work Day." Most adults have heard of this day and know that the purpose is to show the kids what it's like to be a gainfully employed member of society.
Seargant Walter sees things different than most, however, and gave the kids a demonstration of a normal day in the life of a prison inmate. He whipped out his taser and shocked several of the little visitors with 50,000 volts of taser juice. He says that he acted in a completely responsible manner, and tased the kids only after asking their parents for permission.
The shocked kids mostly acted like kids who had just been tased, falling to the floor, screaming in pain, grabbing their burned up little arms, basically whining like a bunch of babies. One of the taser victim kids had to be taken to the hospital.
The kid's ages has not been released, but DOC spokeswoman Jo Ellyn Rackleff confirmed that Walter did indeed tase a bunch of kids. "We believe that a number of children may have received a shock" was Jo Ellyn's official statement.
A week later, the kids have pretty much healed up, physically anyway. Now Seargant Walter is in shock. The prison warden fired the guy, saying that Walter "engaged in inappropriate conduct while demonstrating weapons … to several kids during a special event at the institution." Seargant Walter Schmidt had worked for the prison for 14 years without tasing a single visiting child prior to the April 24th incident. But did the Warden mention that? Hell no he didn't. Hardly any mention has been made of the days that he didn't tase innocent schoolchildren.
Walter doesn't get what all the fuss is about. He just wanted to show kids what it's like to be a tased inmate. When reached by phone Walter said "It wasn't intended to be malicious, but educational. The big shock came when I got fired." Precious, ain't it?
