CLEARWATER, FLA -
A rhesus macaque monkey is reportedly on the loose and running wild in Clearwater, Florida. Yesterday afternoon the monkey was spotted near the intersection of State Road 60 and U.S. 19. Florida Fish and Wildlife officials, police, and the fire department qickly converged upon the scene but were unable to capture the wily little feller.
Vernon Yates, a professional wildlife rehabilitator, has since joined the chase. The monkey was able to dodge a tranquilizer dart, and has been spotted scampering through trees, zipping across a parking lot, and finally disappearing into some brush.
Gary Morse of the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says that the monkey should not be a threat to humans, if getting poop thrown at you is not considered a threat. "They have a potential to do a number on you," Morse said. "Their social habits are different than humans. When they get mad they throw feces." Bystanders and other civilian citizens are urged to not try to engage the monkey in conversation, because the monkey is thought to be pretty mad already, and thus poses a poop throwing danger to the community.
Nobody seems to know where the monkey came from, or where he picked up the nasty habit of throwing feces.
