SINGER ISLAND, FLA -
Thousands of sharks were spotted swimming close to the beach on Singer Island. If you've ever seen a shark's mouth you know that "thousands of sharks" means "millions of razor sharp teeth".
Authorities closed the beaches to prevent silly unsuspecting tourists from losing limbs, digits, or kidneys to the migrating sharks. The sharks are "grey spinning sharks" and swim just below the surface of the water. The sharks swim with their fins totally submerged, so unfortunately it doesn't look like "Jaws 8: Revenge of the Entire Shark Population", but occasionally a rambunctious one will jump out of the water and spin.
"I thought it was a seagull at first," said Kim Griffin, a tourist from Canada, after seeing one of the sharks leaping out of the water. That's what we are dealing with here. Big, aggressive critters that can separate a foot from a leg in about three seconds. Combined with people who think everything they see in the air is a seagull.
The sharks are not generally dangerous to people, as long as the people do not get into the water.
Singer Island is located over by West Palm Beach and is named after the guy who made a fortune selling sewing machines.
