NASCAR™, once thought of as a recession proof, sure thing insulin-like commodity, is starting to crumble like a piece of really dry cake without frosting under the weight of the Wall Street house mortgage sub-prime debacle. The industry that revolves around cars, decorated with bright stickers that promote mindless consumption of various consumer goods and obsessive use of Tide, driving amazingly long distances (500 miles is not uncommon) on a single afternoon within the confines of an oftentimes oval "track" that is essentially a 2.5 mile loop of asphalt that surrounds a large grassy area that is inhabited by millions of the country's finest, all full of alcoholic beverages and carbon monoxide, most of whom really have to pee real bad, and is surrounded by millions of other people who sit in regular seats, all mesmorized and hypnotized, along with billions of television viewers, by the bright colors and the auratory doppler effect that occurs when a fast moving vehicle rides by, is called NASCAR™. And people who work for NASCAR™ are starting to lose their jobs.
Petty Enterprises, which despite the name that conjures images of mediocrity is actually a major player in the NASCAR scene, has fired about thirty people or so.
Mike Bartelli, a Petty Enterprise executive who surprisingly is in no way way related to Earl Bartell, inventor of the K-Mart Blue Light Special, says that "Petty Enterprises is not immune to the current economic downturn. During these tough times, we've had to make some very
difficult decisions, including a reduction in staffing levels and of course we
regret that we had to eliminate any. We're focused on weathering the tough road ahead and aggressively
marketing the Petty brand and sponsorship assets in the months ahead in
preparation for the 2009 season."
And also a bunch of other NASCAR teams have fired people. The various branches of government, be they judicial, executive, or the United States Congress, has not yet reached an agreement.
NASCAR™ is a trademarked name. If you write the word NASCAR™, always follow it with the letters "TM", because as the NASCAR™ thing falls apart the people who own NASCAR™ will be looking for people to sue. They will do this because they are stupid.
