Every once in a while you come across a news story that leaves you with just too many unanswered questions. Like this one.
Ok, here's what we have:
Headline: "Skater hurt in drive by shooting". That makes sense, sounds reasonable enough. There are skaters everywhere, and drive-by shootings seem to be here to stay. So it is entirely plausible that a skater could get hurt by being the victim of, or in the vicinity of, a drive by shooting.
Story: Here is where the whole thing just starts sounding bizarre. The "skater" was in fact a 41 year old woman. Nothing bizarre there. She was skating home, from her job at a liquor store. Still, entirely plausible.
However, the liquor store where the skater victim worked was in Treasure Island, and the skater victim's home is in Duniden. For those of you not familiar with the area, Treasure Island is a hokey little "retro by lack of new development since the early '60s" beach town. It's a cool place. I've walked down the main drag in Treasure Island with my kids and pointed out the hotel signs boasting "Color TV in Each Room", with those eye-catching jumbly looking letters. My kids expressed amusement about how stupid things used to be, and then I told them a story about when my family first got a television set. And then it was time to go home.
But anyway, the point is not that there are color televisions in the hotel rooms, rather that Treasure Island is at the southern end of the Pinellas County coast line. And Dunedin is way at the northern end, up by award-winning, rattlesnake-infested Caladesi Island. A distance of 20 miles or so. So this 41 year old liquor store employee skates 40 miles a day commuting to work? Is it just me? I mean, that's some crazy stuff.
And then there is the time of the crime. 4 AM Friday morning. So the story is that this 41 year old woman was skating 20 miles from her place of employment to her home, and when she was skating through Clearwater (roughly the halfway point between Treasure Island and Duniden), an older model, light-colored, four-door Cadillac pulled up alongside her. The skater and one of the Cadillac passengers spoke, after which the Cadillac passenger shot the woman with a shotgun.
