It's called the "Amethyst Initiative", named after some Greek goddess or Indian gem or something that is supposed to prevent alcohol from causing intoxication. The basic idea behind the Amethyst Initiative is that the drinking age across the USA should be lowered from 21 to 18. But just on college campuses. So what the Amethyst people are saying is that college kids should be able to drink massive amounts of alcohol as soon as they hit the campus, instead of waiting until they turn 21. The beauty of the plan, according to this crystal based organization, is that allowing college kids to drink alcohol earlier will prevent "binge drinking".
So by allowing kids to drink (well those kids that are enrolled in an Amethyst Certified college), they will naturally drink less. According to the Amethyst Initiative website, "A culture of dangerous, clandestine “binge-drinking”—often conducted off-campus—has developed" as a result of archaic draconian dumb-ass laws that seek to prevent 18 year old fully mature adults from drinking alcohol.
The logic behind this is that if you provide an 18 year old with a constant, uninterrupted supply of alcohol, the 18 year old will constantly and without interruption drink alcohol, rather than drink a whole bunch at a time whenever they can get their hands on the stuff.
This makes perfect sense to me. If you were a college president, like the founders of the Amethyst Initiative, and were hip to the fact that "the word Amethyst is derived from the Ancient Greek words meaning “not” (a-) and “intoxicated” (methustos)" (directly from the website) you too would agree. If you do not agree, you probably do not know that "the purple gemstone amethyst was widely believed to be an antidote to the negative effects of intoxication" (another direct Amethyst website quote) as the Amethyst Initiative backers do.
So I encourage all humans, regardless of race, sexual preference, or political affiliation to support the Amethyst Initiative wholeheartedly and without question. These 18 year olds, who as of now are FORBIDDEN BY LAW to drink alcohol, will one day be the Stewards of the Earth. That's one big responsibility. They deserve a drink or two. They deserve to spend their college years in a state of mild to moderate intoxication. And we certainly do not want them binge drinking, especially off-campus.
Besides, we all know that Prohibition caused the Great Depression. And because of Prohibition movies didn't have talking in them. During Prohibition people had to read what the people who acted in the movies were saying.
Need more proof of the evils of Prohibition? Just look at the troubled life of Al Capone. He died from tax evasion, which led to syphillis. And from what I hear, that is one sucky way to die. Your brain develops a small stomach and eats itself. All because they wouldn't let him have a harmless little drink.
