Chad Whitaker and Amanda Ruth Young, both 19, had a wild adventure last week, but ultimately learned that crime just doesn't pay.
It all started with a little bit of innocent fun, driving around the swamps of Pasco County in Chad's pickup truck. But then they spotted a brand new manhole cover and greed took over. While Amanda Ruth stood lookout, Chad tried to wrestle the shiny new manhole into the back of his truck. As luck would have it, a guy was building a fence nearby spotted them and came after them.
Apparently Chad and Amanda Ruth kind of panicked, and jumped in the truck and took off like a couple of bank robbers. In their haste to get out of Dodge, they failed to properly secure the prized manhole cover. And for some crazy reason the fence builder guy gave chase. So their they are, the young modern day Bonnie and Clyde wannabes, flying down State Road 54 trying to make a clean getaway, with the fence builder guy hot on their tail. And calling the Sheriff's office every few minutes to report the latest "10-20". (You know what I mean. Like on Cops when th radio dispatcher says "car 57, what's your 10-20". It means "where are you at?")
So somewhere during this wild chase Chad hits a bump and the coveted manhole cover flies out of the truck and lands in the middle of State Road 54. By this time the police have relieved the fence builder guy and are hunting down the two young criminals. The cops catch up to them and Chad and Amanda Ruth's Bonnie and Clyde dreamworld came crashing down. Chad had some marijuana with him, and Amanda had failed to appear in court for driving without a proper driver's license. Both were charged with grand theft, along with the other crimes against the State.
Chad's bail was set at $5,250 and Amanda Ruth's was set at the strangely odd amount of $5,513. Chad told police that he just thought that the manhole cover would be a cool thing to have laying around the house.
