Deborah Berry was out walking her little hotdog shaped canine ( a dachshund named Ellie) this past Sunday afternoon in Estero, Florida (down around Fort Myers). Suddenly from out of nowhere a viscous rabid coyote appears. Before Deborah could say "what the f..." the crazed, diseased coyote had it's jaws on Ellie the innocent weiner dog. So Deborah is holding a leash attached to Ellie, the coyote has a firm grip on Ellie, and Ellie is suddenly involved in this spontaneous, bizarre, life-threatening game of tug-of-war.
As the wild coyote tried to run off with the poor little weiner-dog, Deborah fought the wild animal, struggling to get the coyote to let go. During the scuffle the coyote bit Deborah on the leg. Rabid coyotes are like that.
Thankfully Deborah won the battle. The coyote ran off into the thickets, apparently unharmed and ready to attack another day. Ellie is recovering, and it looks like she's going to be just fine. Deborah, who passed on the rabies vaccine when Ellie was inoculated, got the dreaded series of shots that people who get bitten by rabid animals must get. Deborah is expected to recover also.
Authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are now telling dog owners to start carrying "sticks or clubs" when walking their dogs. And I would suggest attaching a long, sharp knife to the stick. Or better yet, forget about the stick and just carry a loaded shotgun.
Deborah has not commented, but I would bet that she would agree.
