An Ohio woman vacationing in Florida was injured by a large, sharp-beaked pelican while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. In yet another incident in a long string of occurences where a 50ish woman is attacked viciously by a usually docile creature, the six pound pelican dove out of the sky and into Debbie Shoemaker's face. The pelican's sharp beak punctured Debbie's cheek. Ms. Shoemaker got 25 stitches and cannot eat solid food. And her head really hurts.
Anita Pinder, director of development at Sanibel Island's Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, told reporters that a pelican will angrily snap its beak if a person gets too close or harasses it. Ms. Shoemaker denies that she harrassed the pelican, and no witnesses have come forward to refute her story.
Anita Pinder also said "The person had nothing to do with it; she was simply in the wrong
place at the wrong time because they pelicans clearly do not attack."
Well Anita, there is a woman named Debbie Shoemaker who may argue that pelicans actually do attack. And they attack with a vengeance. They draw blood and inflict tremendous pain.
The pelican is dead. But there are more. They are everywhere along the Gulf Coast and they CAN KILL!
