Here at "Well I'll be go to hell" we seek to enrich the lives of our fellow human beings any way we can. We noticed that we have gotten some hits for "Brain Eating Amoebas". So we decided that it's only right to include some information on the microscopic critters, in case some 6th grader looks us up while writing a paper ot something. So here goes:
Balamuthia mandrillaris, a free-living soil
ameba, can cause granulomatous amebic encephalitis as well as nasopharyngeal,
cutaneous, and disseminated infections in humans, nonhuman primates, and
other animals.
Balamuthia lives in soil and can enter through
the respiratory tract or breaks in the skin. Hispanic Americans may be
more likely to reside in agrarian settings with increased exposure to
soil and opportunities for contamination of cuts and other injuries. Whether
caused by environmental factors, genetic predisposition, access to medical
care, or other socioeconomic factors and pressures, the reasons for the
higher incidence of BAE in Hispanic Americans warrant further study.
They also live in lakes in Florida. They are bad for you. Stay away from them at all costs. And always wash your hands after you pet a dog.
