There are just so many unanswered questions here, and just enough information to make it possible to conjure up a most likely
Rest of the Story.

The kid is fifteen, the mom is fifty-five, the dad is forty-seven, and a bankruptcy attorney. As soon as you see that the father a bankruptcy attorney you realize that this is not the typical Central Florida trailer-park mom/son stabbing. (They're all drunk, the cops have been out there five times already, Mom says "The kid's no good", the kid is 27 and the mom is 40, the kid is bleeding like crazy, refuses medical treatment, and by the time it's over mom and the kid and 2 other random people are carted off to the Orient Road jail). No, this is something totally different.
- The mom was forty when she had the kid, they dad thirty two. They got divorced about four years ago
- So the scenario seems to be: soul-less, semi-attractive, been-around-the-block woman finds a shallow scumbag type guy who is young, has some good income potential, and is easily manipulated through sex. Before the guy knows it, he's married. Then he's a dad.

The guy starts to get better at detecting and performing manipulation, and starts messing with his wife's mind.
- The wife is right there on the edge of dangerous insanity already, so it's not that hard to push her off the edge
- Finally mom goes from a little crazy to full-blown crazy, and the rest is in the article
Pure speculation, of course. And there is much more. You could fill a book with the mom's life-before-marriage, the marriage itself, the kid's tortured existence as manipulation-currency, the events immediately before the attack, and on and on it goes.
I just hope the kid lives, and that this turns into a new-better-life story for the kid.
